Organisational Culture - what's the big deal?

Time and time again, I hear about candidates not lasting their probation period. Why? Because they aren’t the right culture fit for the business.

Culture is the personality of your organisation - it's values, beliefs, behaviours, attitudes and traditions. It doesn’t mean hiring everyone that’s the same. The culture can and should be reflected in a diverse workforce. Like a well-watered plant, a healthy culture only grows upwards, positively impacting those around it and breathing life into your business. If left unattended, a negative culture has the potential to impact all areas of your business.

It’s no secret why recent figures suggest up to 87% of organisations across the world note culture and employee engagement as one of their top priorities. A healthy workplace culture is vital in:

  • Building your reputation as an employer of choice. This is critical in attracting top talent, which is more challenging than ever before

  • It drives engaged employees. Organisations with an engaged team outperform their competitors financially and are generally more successful

  • Strong staff retention. Less time and money spent on recruiting, hiring and training

  • Personal well-being. Research shows that employee happiness and satisfaction are linked to a strong workplace culture

So you're conducting an interview and the candidate is missing a key skill. Most new candidates require training on a new job, regardless of their experience. Skills can be taught however training someone to fit in with an existing culture who isn’t the right fit - is unlikely. We find businesses that focus on the right culture fit rather than all the required skills, tend to have lower staff turnover.

How do we get it right? Be open and honest about your company culture when partnering with your recruiter and during candidate interviews. Two-thirds of professionals feel they have been misled about company culture during a recruitment process. We need to promote the strengths of your company culture whilst still ensuring we are open about the reality. Culture impacts your business just as much as it impacts an individual's life. Let's make sure we get it right the first time.
